Seminar Highlight: Functional Materials and Synthetic Biology: The Perfect Pair for Sensing Disease

We were thrilled to have Dr. Daniel Richards from ETH Zürich present an insightful seminar on November 22, 2024, at ETSEQ. His talk, titled "Functional Materials and Synthetic Biology: The Perfect Pair for Sensing Disease," delved into the critical role of in vitro diagnostics (IVDs) in healthcare.

Dr. Richards highlighted the importance of making diagnostics accessible to all, especially in low-resource settings. He shared groundbreaking research from his lab, showcasing how functional materials and synthetic biology can simplify and enhance bioassays. One of the standout innovations discussed was the use of laser-graphenised cellulose to create affordable, scalable paper-based analytical devices (µPADS) capable of performing various disease assays. Additionally, he touched on the latest advancements in CRISPR-Cas-based biosensors, moving these technologies closer to point-of-care applications.

Dr. Richards' extensive background in chemistry and chemical biology, combined with his innovative research at ETH Zürich, continues to push the boundaries of biosensing and diagnostics.

Thank you, Dr. Richards, for an engaging and enlightening seminar!
